JUNIO / JUNE 2026. Villa de Leyva, Colombia
Bueno, pues este mes, viajando por Colombia, entre otras muchas cosas bonitas, hemos tenido la posibilidad de visitar un lugar maravilloso, donde uno retrocede en un instante a la España del siglo XVI, a una de sus ciudades de entonces con su magnífica Plaza Mayor.
Se trata de Villa de Leyva, en el departamento de Boyacá, fundada en 1572 por el capitán Hernán Suárez de Villalobos, siguiendo las normas arquitectónicas españolas de la época.
Su Plaza Mayor es la más grande de Colombia, con unos 14.000 metros cuadrados. Su vasto espacio empedrado, donde destaca la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, está rodeado de casonas blancas con techos de teja roja, reflejo de la herencia española que la ciudad ha preservado.
Allí se celebran festivales de música, ferias gastronómicas y otras manifestaciones culturales, convirtiéndola en el corazón vibrante del pueblo.
Este rincón conserva el encanto andaluz en sus balcones y ventanas de madera y es un magnífico ejemplo de cómo la herencia española, desde la arquitectura hasta las tradiciones, permanece de forma admirable en la vida cotidiana de Villa de Leyva.
Colombia es un país maravilloso, con cientos de parajes y lugares por descubrir, y su gente es afable y cercana. Villa de Leyva muestra además la imagen de una parte de la España del siglo XVI congelada en el tiempo.
Algo digno de ver para un español, de disfrutar y maravillarse ante la huella imborrable que dejamos en el mundo. ¡Qué grandes fuimos y qué grandes cosas hicimos!
Well, this month, while travelling through Colombia, among many other beautiful experiences, we had the chance to visit a wonderful place where you instantly step back into 16th-century Spain, into one of its cities of the time with its magnificent Main Square.
I am talking about Villa de Leyva, in the Boyacá department of Colombia, founded in 1572 by Captain Hernán Suárez de Villalobos, following the Spanish architectural standards of that period.
Its Main Square is the largest in Colombia, covering around 14,000 square metres. This vast cobblestone space, dominated by the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, is surrounded by white houses with red-tiled roofs, reflecting the Spanish heritage the city has preserved.
Music festivals, gastronomic fairs and many other cultural events take place here, making it the vibrant heart of the town.
This corner preserves an Andalusian charm through its wooden balconies and windows and is a magnificent example of how Spanish heritage, from architecture to traditions, continues to live beautifully in the daily life of Villa de Leyva.
Colombia is a wonderful country, with hundreds of breathtaking places to visit, and its people are warm and welcoming. Villa de Leyva also offers the image of a fragment of 16th-century Spain frozen in time.
Something truly worth seeing for a Spaniard, to enjoy and marvel at the indelible mark we left on the world. How great we were, and what great things we achieved!
