ENERO / JANUARY 2026. Lepanto y la Virgen del Rosario Bueno, pues este mes se ha inaugurado una exposición en Granada sobre el ilustre marino español (y granadino) Don Álvaro de Bazán. Con ella, se inicia lo que se ha dado en llamar “el año de Álvaro de Bazán”, a lo largo del cual, Granada pretende reivindicar la figura de uno de sus hijos más ilustres, considerado, además, el mejor marino de todos los tiempos. Será un año cargado de eventos a lo largo y ancho de la provincia de Granada, con exposiciones, conferencias, concursos escolares, juras de bandera y visitas a buques de la Armada. Esto me lleva a recordar que la misma imagen de la Virgen del Rosario, que Don Álvaro de Bazán llevó consigo a la batalla de Lepanto, se encuentra en la iglesia de Santo Domingo, en pleno barrio del Realejo en la ciudad de Granada. Está expuesta en el magnífico camarín que hay adosado al crucero de la iglesia, pues… Estando la nave capitana de Don Álvaro en Algeciras, antes de partir para combatir al Turco, el Almirante envió desde allí a treinta de sus hombres al convento de Santo Domingo en Granada a por la virgen. El prior, sorprendido les dijo que “si se la llevaban, ¿A quién iban a hacer las rogativas?” A lo que se le contestó: “Los rezos los oirá la virgen donde quiera que esté, mas los soldados gustan de ver entre ellos a quien los manda. Si el Santo Padre os manda pedir a la Virgen por nuestro triunfo, él será gustoso en saber que Ella está entre nosotros”. Al día siguiente, la galera “La Loba”, nave capitana de la flota, salía para Mesina y después a Lepanto. Es sin duda una sensación única el ir a visitar a la virgen del Rosario en Granada y saber que se está frente a la misma imagen que protegió a las tropas españolas en lo que Don Miguel de Cervantes llamó “la mayor ocasión que vieron los siglos”, la batalla de Lepanto (el 7 de octubre de 1571). Algo que sobrecoge el alma. Well, this month has started in Granada an exhibition about the illustrious Spanish Admiral Don Álvaro de Bazán. With this begins what has been called “the year of Álvaro de Bazán”, during which Granada intends to highlight the figure of one of its most distinguished sons, considered, moreover, the greatest sailor of all time. It will be a year full of events throughout the province, with exhibitions, lectures, school competitions, flag ceremonies, and visits to Navy ships. This reminds me that the very image of the Virgin of the Rosary, which Don Álvaro de Bazán carried with him to the Battle of Lepanto, is located in the Church of Santo Domingo, right in the Realejo district in the city of Granada. She is displayed in the magnificent chapel attached to the church’s transept, because… In 1571, while Don Álvaro’s flagship was in Algeciras, before setting off to fight the Turks, the Admiral sent thirty of his men from there to the Santo Domingo convent in Granada to fetch the Virgin. The prior, surprised, told them, “If you take her away, to whom will we say our prayers?” To which they replied, “The Virgin will hear the prayers wherever she may be, but the soldiers like to see their commander among them. If the Holy Father commands you to pray the Virgin for our victory, he will be pleased to know that She is with us.” The next day, the galley ‘La Loba’, flagship of the Admiral, set sail for Messina and then to Lepanto. It is with no doubt a unique feeling to visit the Virgin of the Rosary in the church of Santo Domingo, Granada, knowing that you are in front of the same image that protected the Spanish troops in what Miguel de Cervantes called “the greatest occasion the centuries ever saw,” the Battle of Lepanto (1571, October the seventh). Something that moves the soul deeply.

DICIEMBRE / DECEMBER 2025. En la línea de partida Bueno, pues el que la persigue la consigue… El tesón es fundamental para alcanzar el éxito, pero siempre acompañándolo de un trabajo constante y de mucha fe. Llevaba ya un tiempo buscando que mis dibujos pudieran atraer la atención del Patronato de la Alhambra y que pudieran estar en sus tiendas de la Alhambra y de Granada. Pues ya hemos llegado ahí. En la foto podéis ver los dos primeros expuestos en una de sus tiendas. En cualquier caso, esto no significa haber llegado a la meta, sino más bien simplemente el haber alcanzado la línea de partida. A partir de ahora hay que esperar a ver la aceptación de los mismos y si esta es positiva, seguir avanzando, aprendiendo, experimentando y dibujando. Ahí estamos, esto no ha hecho más que empezar… Well, those who pursue it, achieve it… Perseverance is essential to reach success, but it must always be accompanied by consistent work and a lot of faith. I had been trying for some time to get my drawings to catch the attention of the Alhambra Board and to have them available in their stores in the Alhambra and Granada. Well, it seems I have reached that point… In the photo, you can see the first two displayed in one of their stores. In any case, this doesn’t mean I’ve reached the goal, but rather that I’ve simply reached the starting line. From now on, I will have to wait and see the public’s response to them and if it’s positive, continue moving forward, that’s to say continue learning, experimenting, and drawing. Here we are, this is just the beginning…

NOVIEMBRE / NOVEMBER 2025. La Alhambra planificada Bueno, pues este mes he podido disfrutar de la exposición temporal “La Alhambra planificada” en el Palacio de Carlos V. En ella se muestra la Alhambra a través de la planificación de la preservación del recinto a lo largo del tiempo, destacando el papel protagonista que han tenido determinados personajes en la tarea de crear, planificar y llevar a cabo los objetivos de protección y conservación. Cronológicamente, abarca desde la propia creación de la ciudad palatina tras la instauración de la dinastía nazarí en la Granada de 1238 hasta nuestros días. De momento he ido a verla ya en tres ocasiones, pero no descarto volver a pasar a verla más veces, ha, ha… Y la visita con guía es ya un disfrute total. Well, this month I have enjoyed the temporary exhibition “The Alhambra Planned” at the Palace of Charles V. It showcases the Alhambra through the lens of the preservation plans for the site over time, highlighting the key roles played by certain individuals in creating, planning, and implementing the objectives of protection and conservation. Chronologically, it spans from the very creation of the palatine city after the establishment of the Nasrid dynasty in Granada in 1238 to the present day. I’ve already visited it three times, but I wouldn’t rule out going back again, ha ha… And the guided tour is a total delight!
JULIO / JULY 2025. Dibujando en la Alhambra
Bueno, pues este mes he regresado a la Alhambra en varias ocasiones para seguir dibujando en el interior del recinto. Esta es una experiencia que ya empecé el verano pasado y que estaba deseando repetir. Y como ya tengo localizados los lugares desde donde dibujar, pues todo ha sido coser y cantar. La experiencia es, sin duda, única. Es un disfrute para los sentidos. Te permite disfrutar con tranquilidad del entorno y al mismo tiempo te permite interactuar con los turistas, pues algunos de ellos se paran a mirar y a charlar. Así que también me viene bien para desengrasar algunos de los idiomas que más olvidados tengo. Llego allí sobre las 08:30h de la mañana y alrededor de las 12:00h, que es cuando aprieta Lorenzo, pues ya estoy saliendo con el dibujo prácticamente acabado. Posteriormente, echando un rato más en casa para perfilarlo, ya lo dejo listo. Aquí podéis ver un ejemplo. This is an experience that I started last summer and I was eager to repeat. Since I had already located the places to draw from, it’s been a piece of cake. The experience is, without a doubt, unique. It’s a delight for the senses. It allows you to calmly enjoy the surroundings and at the same time to interact with the tourists, as some of them stop to look and chat. So it’s also good for me to brush up on some of my most forgotten languages. I use to arrive there around 8:30 in the morning, and around 12:00, when the sun hits hard, I’m already leaving with the drawing practically finished.
