NOVIEMBRE / NOVEMBER 2024. M.C. Escher y la Alhambra.
Bueno, bueno, bueno, vaya sorpresa… Que resulta que visitando el museo de la Alhambra, he visto unos alicatados de la época Nazarí y la memoria me ha transportado directamente a la obra del artista holandés Mauritius Cornelius Escher (1898-1972) y a su partición periódica de la superficie. Así que al llegar a casa, he ido a la estantería de mi estudio y he desempolvado ese catálogo de su exposición “El arte de lo imposible” que visité allá por el año 2007, en el canal de Isabel II, en Madrid. Y leyéndolo (cosa que no debí hacer en su día), pues resulta que Escher visitó la Alhambra en varias ocasiones y fue a raíz de su segunda visita en 1936, cuando quedó profundamente impresionado precisamente por los dibujos geométricos de los mosaicos de azulejos y yeserías que allí vio. Y fue precisamente en ellos donde encontró su fuente de inspiración, de tal manera que desde 1937 empieza un nuevo periodo en su obra, que está compuesto por composiciones derivadas de su imaginación e inspiradas en las innumerables notas que tomó de aquellas composiciones durante aquella visita a la Alhambra. Pues eso, el poder de la Alhambra… —————oo0oo————— Well, well, well, what a nice surprise… It turns out that this month, while visiting the Alhambra museum, I spotted some examples of tiling from the Nasrid period in Granada and my memory took me directly to the work of the Dutch artist Mauritius Cornelius Escher (1898-1972) and his periodic partitioning of the surface. So when I arrived at home, I checked in the bookshelf and dusted off that catalog of the Escher exhibition; “The Art of the Impossible” that I visited in 2007 at the Isabel II Canal expo center in Madrid. And reading it (something it seems I did not do at that time), it turns out that Escher visited the Alhambra on several occasions and, it was after his second visit in 1936, when he was deeply impressed by the geometric drawings of the tile mosaics and plasterwork. And it was there precisely where he found a new source of inspiration, in such a way that since 1937 a new period in his work begins, which is made of compositions derived from his imagination and inspired by the countless notes he took during that visit to the Alhambra. OCTUBRE / OCTOBER 2024. Disfrutando del otoño.
Bueno, pues otra vez disfrutando de la naturaleza y haciendo un poco de ejercicio con los camaradas de milicia. La provincia de Granada cuenta con innumerables recorridos memorables en plena naturaleza, de los cuales no pienso perderme ni uno, ha, ha… En esta ocasión nos hemos movido por la vertiente norte de Sierra Nevada, por la zona que llaman “el bosque encantado”, justo cuando se empieza a producir el milagro del otoño y el bosque va cambiando poco a poco de color. Algo que no por el hecho de repetirse cada año, deja de impresionarme. Y además, ayuda a cargar las pilas… ¡Alístate y conocerás mundo! —————oo0oo————— Well, once again I have been enjoying nature and exercising with the Army comrades. The province of Granada has countless of memorable routes in plain nature, of which I do not plan to miss a single one, ha, ha… On this occasion we have been moving along the northern side of the Sierra Nevada, through the area called “the enchanted forest”, just when the miracle of autumn begins to happen and the forest is gradually changing its color. Something that, no matter that it happens every year, does not stop impressing me. And experiencing it also helps charging the batteries… Join the Army and you will see the world!
Septiembre / September 2023. El psicopompo
Bueno, pues nunca es tarde para encontrarse con un psicopompo, que no es más que un ser que tiene el papel de conducir a las almas de los difuntos hacia el más allá (del griego psyche “alma” y pompós “el que guia o conduce”). En la religion cristiana se le puede representar con forma de angel. Y en la foto de arriba podeis ver uno de ellos, con el que me encontré en el claustro del monasterio de San Jerónimo en Granada. Este icono del renacimiento granadino fue el primer monasterio cristiano construido tras la Reconquista de Granada por los Reyes Católicos. Una auténtica joya de la arquitectura y lugar donde esta enterrado el Gran Capitan, Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba. Voy a necesitar varias vidas para visitar todas las maravillas que ofrece esta ciudad encantada, pues Granada no es solo la Alhambra. Monasterios, conventos, iglesias, plazas, placetas, rincones, monumentos hispano-musulmanes, cármenes, palacios, casas palaciegas y un sin fin de lugares con encanto que te sorprenden a la vuelta de cualquier esquina. ehalf- ¡Granada, que ciudad más bonita! ————–——-oo0oo————– Well, it is never too late to meet a psychopomp, which is nothing more than a being that has the function of leading the souls of the deceased to the afterlife (from the Greek psyche «soul» and pompós «who guides or leads.» «). Monasteries, convents, churches, squares, half-squares, corners, Spanish-Muslim monuments, cármenes, palaces, palatial houses and an endless number of charming places that surprise you around any corner. Granada, what a beautiful city!
Agosto / August 2023. Esos pequeños momentos.
Bueno, pues no hay duda de que a veces los pequeños momentos tienen un valor incalculable. Relajado, con la mejor compañía y formando parte de un paisaje único. Dejar la mente en blanco y disfrutar del momento. ¡Que haya muchos mas así! ———————oo0oo————– Well, there is no doubt that sometimes small moments are invaluable. Julio / July 2023. Los 300 españoles de Buda
Bueno, pues estando tan cerquita de Budapest, este mes hemos aprovechado para volver por y pagar tributo al memorial a los 300 españoles que en 1686 abrieron la brecha en la muralla de Buda. Ello permitiría expulsar a los habíanfácilmente, es mas, hay que buscarlo. Pero sin duda es un hito mas a visitar en la , que han luchado a lo largo y ancho de los cinco continentes, merecen nuestro reconocimiento y en Buda hay un magnífico memorial a 300 de ellos. ———————oo0oo————– Well, being so close to Budapest, this month we have return there and pay tribute to the 300 Spaniards who on 1686 opened the breach during the siege of Buda what would allow the Holly League to expel the Ottomans, who had taken the city 145 years before. The truth is that this monument is not easily found, it is more, you have to look for it. But without a doubt it is one more landmark to visit in the beautifull city of Buda. Well, our heroes, who have fought along the five continents, deserve our recognition and in Buda there is a magnificent memorial to 300 of them.
Junio / June 2023. La Alhambra
Bueno, pues este mes nos hemos dado un garbeo por Granada y hemos aprovechado para volver a visitar la Alhambra. La última vez fue hace ya veintiún años. Así que ya tocaba… La decoración de los interiores de los Palacios Nazaríes, sus jardines, etc… son inigualables y la integración de todo el conjunto con la naturaleza es algo único. La belleza de su contemplación al atardecer desde el barrio del Albaicín es algo que permanece para siempre en la retina. Declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1984 junto con el Generalife y el barrio del Albaicín, es un conjunto que uno debería tener la posibilidad de admirar al menos una vez en esta vida… Ya he hecho un primer dibujo de uno de sus detalles, que podéis ver aquí en la sección de dibujos y plumillas. Y a partir de ahora vendrán muchos mas, pues voy a tener muchas ocasiones de visitarla. ———————oo0oo————– Well, this month we have visited Granada and taken the opportunity to visit the Alhambra again. The last time that we did it, was twenty-one years ago. So it was about time … The decoration of the interiors of the Nazaries Palaces, their gardens, etc … They are unmatched. The integration of the whole thing with the nature is something unique. And the beauty of its contemplation at sunset from the Albaicin neighborhood is something that remains forever in your mind. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984 along with the Generalife and the Albaicin district, it is a set that one should have the chance to admire at least once in this life… I have already made a first drawing of one of the details of it, which you can see in this webpage in the section of drawings and pen & ink. And from now on many more will come, since I will have many opportunities to pay a visit to it.
Mayo / May 2023. Puertas…
Bueno, pues yo creo que ya es incontable el numero de fotografías que he sacado a portales y puertas de casas y edificios de distintos estilos que me he encontrado no solo en Bucarest y Rumania sino en todos los países por los que hemos pasado. Realmente las puertas aportan un gran valor como elemento arquitectónico realzando la estética de los edificios donde se encuentran. Hay verdaderas maravillas en esta ciudad dentro de ese estilo de renacimiento rumano que se puede encontrar escondido en tantos rincones aquí. Y da gusto ver como muchas de ellas, tan imponentes, recobran todo su fuerza y presencia en los edificios y villas que sin pausa se van restaurando en esta ciudad. Algún día tendré que hacer algo con todas esas fotos… ———————oo0oo————– Well, I think it is already countless the number of photographs I have taken to portals and doors of houses and buildings of different styles that I have found not only in Bucharest and Romania but in all the countries we have visited or lived in. They really provide great value as an architectural element enhancing the aesthetics of the buildings where they are located. There are real wonders in this city, specially in the Romanian renaissance style buildings that can be found hidden in so many corners here. And it is nice to see how many of them, so imposing, recover all their strength and presence in the buildings and villas that are being restored without pause in this city. Someday I’ll have to do something with all those pictures…
Abril / April 2023. Reflexionando
Bueno, pues este mes me he dedicado a recapitular sobre la exposición de marzo pasado, reflexionar, planear el futuro artístico y ver cuales van a ser los siguientes pasos y posibles hitos. Repasando fotos me ha venido a la memoria que hace ahora justo diez años, cuando vivíamos en EEUU, pasamos unos días en Gettysburg y recorrimos el campo de batalla, que esta plagado de monumentos que recuerdan aquel momento en la historia de los EEUU y que incluye el Cementerio Nacional de Gettysburg. Curiosamente, allí a los gobernantes no se les ocurre destruir dichos monumentos, que recuerdan la batalla clave en la que los EEUU del Norte se impusieron a los Estados Confederados del Sur. De hecho, recibe cientos de miles de visitantes cada año. En fin, siglos de historia contemplan a España, una nación que fue la primera potencia global y sin la cual no se podría comprender el mundo actual. Y aquí seguimos generando políticos tan incapaces, que nos quieren convencer de que destruyendo, es la mejor manera de construir el futuro… ———————oo0oo————– Well, this month I have been recapitulating on last March’s exhibition. I reflected, started to plan the artistic future and tried to think about the next steps and possible milestones. Reviewing photos it has come to my mind that just ten years ago, when we lived in the USA, we spent a few days in Gettysburg and toured the battlefield, which is full of monuments that remember that key moment in the history of the USA. The site includes the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Over there, the government do not think to destroy it, which recall the key battle in which the United States of the North imposed itself on the Confederate States of the South. In fact, Gettysburg receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. In short, centuries of history contemplate Spain, a nation that was the first global power and without which the current world could not be understood. And here we continue to generate politicians so incapable, that they want to convince us that destroying is the best way to build the future…
Marzo / March 2023. Exposicion «Romania Frumoasa».
Bueno, pues que tenía ganas yo de compartir mis ultimos dibujos sobre rincones pintorescos de Rumania… Así que me lié la manta a la cabeza y he organizado la exposicion “Romania frumoasa” (Rumania bonita) de nuevo en la galeria del Circulo Militar Nacional, en el centro de Bucarest, desde el 13 al 26 de marzo. La embajada de España en Bucarest ha apoyado la exposicion. Cuarenta obras entre esculturas, oleos, acuarelas y dibujos, la mayoria de ellas con motivos rumanos. Oye, que me han entrevistado Radio Romania Actualitat, han salido reportajes de mi expo en la tele; en el programa TVR Cultural, en la TVR 1, en el programa militar de la TVR 1 y han publicado un articulo en el periodico “Observatorul Militar”… Ha tenido una muy buena aceptacion y ha pasado un buen numero de gente por ella. Estoy contento. A la gente le ha gustado mi obra. Algo me dice que esto no ha hecho mas que empezar. La siguiente, en España. ———————oo0oo————– Well, it seems that I wanted to share my latest drawings about picturesque corners of Romania… So I displayed the exhibition “Romania frumoasa” (beautiful Romania) at the gallery of the National Military Circle, downtown Bucharest, from March 13 to 26. Forty works including sculptures, oils, watercolors and drawings, most of them with Romanian motifs. I have been interviewed by Radio Romania Actualitat, the TVR Cultural program, TVR 1, the military program of TVR 1, and an article has been published in the newspaper “Observatorul Militar”. Not bad at all! The exhibition had very good acceptance and many people visited it. I am quite happy with the outcome. The people liked my artwork. Something is telling me that it has only just begun. The next one in Spain!
Febrero / February 2023. Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa
Bueno, bueno, bueno… que casualmente me he encontrado con el original de un dibujo que me tiene maravillado desde el dia que lo pillé en internet, hace ya unos cuantos años. Es el que podeis ver en la imagen, “Arabe con mosquete”, del pintor modernista español Antonio Fabrés y Costa. Y mira por donde que he tenido que dar con el original aquí en Rumania, en la exposicion “Maestros de la pintura española del siglo XIX”, que se puede visitar hasta el 15 de mayo en el palacio Dacia-Rumania, en el centro de Bucarest. Ahí se puede disfrutar de obras de Joaquin Sorolla, Mariano Fortuny, Raimundo de Madrazo, Jose Maria Gallegos y otros maestros españoles de la época. ¡Una autentica sorpresa y una gozada! ¡Que exposicion más bonita!. Bucarest, una ciudad sorprendente… ———————–oo0oo————– Well, well, well… by chance I have found the original of a drawing that has amazed me since the day I found it on the internet, long time ago. And I have found the original here in Romania, thanks to the exhibition «Masters of 19th-century Spanish painting», which can be visited until May 15 at the Dacia-Romania palace, in Bucharest downtown. There you can enjoy works by Joaquin Sorolla, Mariano Fortuny, Raimundo de Madrazo, Jose Maria Gallegos and other Spanish masters of the time. A real surprise and a real joy!
