Septiembre / September 2024. Dibujando en la Alhambra.
Bueno, ya estamos ahí, dibujando en la Alhambra. En la foto podéis ver un ejemplo de ello. Habiéndome leído los “Cuentos de la Alhambra” recientemente, cuando me siento en mi silla plegable para dibujar en alguno de sus rincones, puedo sentir la magia y las leyendas que rodean este lugar y percibir ese número de siglos que te observan impasibles. Algo no muy distinto debió sentir Washington Irving cuando en 1829 vivió en aquella Alhambra en ruinas, o cualquiera de los escritores y dibujantes románticos que vinieron atraídos por los relatos de Irving. Bueno, ahora también puedes encontrarte por aquí cientos de turistas…, que aunque uno intente enmascararse en rincones escondidos, acaba siendo descubierto. Y no son pocos los que se acercan, hacen comentarios o preguntan sobre el dibujo, lo cual saca a uno de su ensimismamiento, pero esto también tiene su encanto, porqué no. El hecho de que de alguna manera te expresen que valoran tu arte, también tiene su magia, sin duda… —————oo0oo————— Well, I am already there, drawing inside the Alhambra. Having read the “Tales of the Alhambra” recently, when I sit in my folding chair in order to draw any of its corners, I can feel the magic and legends that surround this place, and perceive the number of centuries that observe us impassively. Washington Irving must have felt something not very different when he lived in that ruined Alhambra in 1829 and also any of the romantic writers and sketchers who came attracted by Irving’s stories. Well, now there are also hundreds of tourists walking around here…, and even if one tries to hide away from them, ends up being discovered and there are quite a few of them who approach, make comments or ask about the drawing, which takes you out of the self-absorption. But this also has its charm, why not. The fact that in some way they express to you that they value your art is also a magic feeling, no doubt…
Agosto / August 2024. Fundición a la cera perdida.
Bueno, pues voy a aprovechar este mes para explicaros el proceso de fundición a la cera perdida, el que se sigue para crear una estatua de bronce que tantas veces me ha tocado explicar. No es un proceso precisamente sencillo. Lo que aquí os cuento es lo que se hace en el caso de figuras pequeñas como las mías; en caso de grandes monumentos, el proceso tiene una mayor complejidad. Dicho proceso se inicia con una escultura tridimensional realizada por el escultor en materiales diversos. Este proceso implica la creación de moldes de caucho y cerámica. Molde de Caucho: Se fabrica aplicando capas de caucho líquido sobre la escultura original formando una manta flexible de caucho sobre dicha escultura. Se crea una línea de separación y se construyen bridas de caucho y carcasas de yeso que harán de soporte de dicho molde. Cuando ha secado, el molde se retira de él la figura original dejando un molde de caucho reutilizable para hacer con él réplicas en cera. Hacer la Cera: La cera es una reproducción tridimensional de la escultura original realizada a base de capas de cera dentro del molde de caucho. Tras enfriarse dicha reproducción en cera, se obtiene una figura hueca de cera lista para retocar. Retocar la Cera: La figura de cera se retoca para eliminar imperfecciones y hacerla fiel a la escultura original. Se utilizan herramientas de metal caliente para suavizar y texturizar la cera, asegurando que la posterior obra final en bronce sea exacta. Preparar la Figura en Cera: La figura de cera se prepara para la fundición agregando bebederos y compuertas, formando un sistema de plomería que permitirá la evacuación de la cera y la entrada del bronce en el molde a través de dichos bebederos. Creación de un molde de cerámica: Se sumerge la cera en lechada cerámica y se recubre con arena refractaria, formando un molde de cerámica de un solo uso. Este proceso se repite hasta obtener el grosor de molde deseado. Cocción de la carcasa y vertido de bronce: La carcasa se cuece en un horno, derritiendo la cera que permanece en su interior y vitrificando la cerámica. Posteriormente se vierte bronce fundido en la carcasa caliente, ocupando el lugar que ocupaba la cera. Tras enfriarse, hay que romper la carcasa para sacar el bronce de su interior, que se va a tener que limpiar de residuos cerámicos. Acabado del Bronce: Las partes del sistema de plomería que ahora también son de bronce se cortan y eliminan. Pátina: Se aplica una coloración química a la superficie del bronce calentado, depositando una capa de óxidos. La pátina se sella con cera o laca para protegerla. En este momento, la figura en bronce está lista para su exhibición en la galería de arte. ¡Bueno, y ahora a volver a leer este proceso para acabar de comprenderlo ha ha…! —————oo0oo————— Well this month I am going to explain to you the lost wax casting process, the one followed to create a bronze statue which I have had to explain so many times, ha ha…. It is not exactly a simple process. What I am telling you here is what is done in the case of small figures like mine; in the case of large monuments, the process is more complex. This process begins with a three-dimensional sculpture made by the sculptor in various materials. This process involves the creation of rubber and ceramic molds. Rubber Mold: It is manufactured by applying layers of liquid rubber on the original sculpture, forming a flexible rubber blanket on the sculpture. A separation line is created, and rubber flanges and plaster casings are built that will support the mold. When the mold has dried, the original figure is removed from it, leaving a reusable rubber mold to make wax replicas. Making the Wax: The wax is a three-dimensional reproduction of the original sculpture made by pouring layers of wax inside the rubber mold. After this wax reproduction cools, a hollow wax figure is obtained, ready for retouching. Retouch the Wax: The wax figure is retouched to eliminate imperfections and make it faithful to the original sculpture. Hot metal tools are used to soften and texture the wax, ensuring that the subsequent final bronze work is exact. Prepare the Wax Figure: The wax figure is prepared for casting by adding sprues and gates, forming a plumbing system that will allow the evacuation of the wax and the entry of the bronze into the mold through these sprues. Creating a ceramic mold: The wax is immersed in ceramic slurry and covered with refractory sand, forming a single-use ceramic mold. This process is repeated until the desired mold thickness is obtained. Firing the shell and pouring the bronze: The shell is fired in a kiln, melting the wax that remains inside and vitrifying the ceramic. Molten bronze is then poured into the hot shell, taking the place of the wax. After cooling, the casing must be broken to remove the bronze from inside, which will have to be cleaned of ceramic residue. Bronze Finish: The parts of the plumbing system, which are now also bronze, are cut and removed. Patina: A chemical coloration is applied to the surface of heated bronze, depositing a layer of oxides. The patina is sealed with wax or lacquer to protect it. At this moment, the bronze figure is ready for display in the art gallery. Well, and you have to read this process again to fully understand it, ha ha…!
Julio / July 2024. Tarjeta de pintor.
Bueno, pues este mes he estrenado la tarjeta de pintor, que me ha proporcionado el Patronato de la Alhambra, para poder pintar o dibujar en el interior del recinto y que además permite el acceso a un precio muy razonable. Después de unas sesiones de “reconocimiento”, donde me he dedicado a localizar lugares desde donde poder dibujar vistas singulares, ya solo queda empezar a dibujar. La próxima visita ya será para ponerme manos a la obra. Espero que esta fantástica posibilidad de lugar a un buen número de buenos dibujos. ¡Poder pasear y dibujar con toda tranquilidad en un paraje único como es la Alhambra! ¡Vamos, ni en mis mejores sueños! ¡Yuhuuuuu! —————oo0oo————— Well, this month I have got my painter’s card, provided by the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra, to be able to paint or draw inside the enclosure. Furthermore, it allows access at a very reasonable price. After some “recce” sessions, in order to find nice places from where to get unique views, all that remains is to start drawing. So, the next visit will be to get to work in the first of those selected places. I hope this fantastic possibility leads to a number of good drawings. Walking and drawing relaxed in a unique place like the Alhambra! Come on, not even in my wildest dreams! Yuuhuuuu!
Mayo / May 2024. 40 años de la XLIV promoción de la AGM
Bueno, pues este mes, la XLIV promoción de la Academia General Militar hemos vuelto a renovar en Zaragoza nuestros votos de juramento a la bandera de España. Este rito de la Rejura se renueva cuando las promociones de cadetes cumplen 25, 40 y 50 años de existencia y forma parte del “Espíritu de la General”, que es un vinculo de union entre todos nosotros que permanece vivo con el paso de los años y que nos impulsa a reafirmarnos en nuestro juramento de defender a España hasta la ultima gota de nuestra sangre. La XLIV promocion tiene la suerte y el honor de contar entre sus filas con SSMM el Rey Felipe VI y ademas, este año estaba tambien en formacion, como cadete, la Princesa Leonor, con lo que esta celebración ha constituido una ocasión única. El volvernos a juntar para tal ocasión, despues de tantos años sin vernos muchos de nosotros, supone un espaldarazo al espíritu y los lazos que nos unen desde aquellos lejanos años 1984-1989, cuando cursamos la carrera militar en la AGM. Un día inolvidable. ¡Viva España, Viva el Rey y viva la XLIV promoción de la AGM! —————oo0oo————— Well, this month, the XLIV class of the General Military Academy (GMA) has once again renewed the oath to the flag of Spain in Zaragoza. Abril / April 2024. Santa Fe.
Este mes, se han cumplido 533 años de la firma de las Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, el acuerdo entre los Reyes Católicos y Cristobal Colon que abrió las puertas al descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. Dicho aniversario se convierte cada año en todo un acontecimiento cultural y turístico en el municipio.Santa Fe, que marcó el diseño de las capitales del Nuevo Mundo, fue fundada en 1491 como cuartel general de las tropas de los Reyes Católicos en la conquista del reino de Granada.Dichas capitulaciones se consideran uno de los documentos mas trascendentales de la historia universal. Una historia universal jalonada de hitos aportados por España.Así que alli nos fuimos a revivir dicho momento histórico y a empaparnos de nuestra historia, que no tiene parangon. Sin duda un día para celebrar. ————oo0oo————— This month marks the 533rd anniversary of the signing of the Capitulations of Santa Fe, the agreement between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus that opened the doors to the discovery of the New World. Marzo / March 2024. Washington Irving
Este mes, he tenido la oportunidad de visitar en Granada una encantadora exposición sobre el escritor e historiador romántico americano Washington Irving. Viajero incansable, entre sus obras se hallan no pocas relacionadas con España. Residió en diferentes localidades españolas y en 1829 llegó a habitar en la misma Alhambra. Del extraordinario magnetismo que tuvieron para él Granada y la Alhambra, surgieron sus famosos “Cuentos de la Alhambra”. Fué uno de los primeros viajeros romanticos en recorrer España. Sus “Cuentos de la Alhambra” volvieron a colocar a Granada en el mapa mundial y desde entonces, estos han atraido a un sinfin de peregrinos a esta maravillosa ciudad. Granada, sin duda, le debe mucho a este ilustre personaje. Y puede decirse tambien que el acercamiento americano a España tiene por precursor indiscutible a este inquieto soñador… “Soy un inveterado viajero, he leido algo, visto y oido más y soñado mucho más. Mi cabeza está, pues, henchida de toda clase de cosas raras y sabidas. Al viajar, estos heterogeneos materiales se revuelven en mi imaginacion como los artículos de una revuelta valija, de tal modo que, cuando trato de extraer un hecho, no puedo determinar si lo he leído, me lo han contado o lo he soñado”. A tireless traveller, he wrote a number of works related to Spain. He lived in different Spanish cities and in 1829 he came to live in the Alhambra for a period of time. From the extraordinary magnetism of Granada and the Alhambra, came his «Tales of the Alhambra». He was one of the first romantic travellers in Spain and his «Tales of the Alhambra» put Granada back on the world map and since then, they have attracted countless pilgrims to this charming city. Granada, without a doubt, owes a big deal to him. Febrero / February 2024. Ahí seguimos…

El objetivo es ir acortando la distancia existente con los Maestros, aunque sea mínimamente y paso a paso ir mejorando la calidad de mis dibujos. Ahi podéis ver mi visión de otro rincon del Albaycin. Enero / January 2024. A toda máquina
Bueno, pues no por mucho madrugar amanece más temprano… No basta con que uno este deseando dibujar los fantásticos rincones que encuentra y que disponga de motivos de sobra para dibujar. No basta la diligencia y conviene no precipitarse en el trabajo, pues, al parecer, los acontecimientos deben seguir su curso natural. Así que, sin entender muy bien porqué, me ha costado unos meses coger velocidad de crucero con la producción artistica en un lugar sin igual como es Granada, pero bueno, ya estamos ahí. Ahi teneis mi visión de un encantador rincón del Albaicín. Diciembre / December 2023. El milagro de la Navidad
Bueno, pues se ha vuelto a producir el milagro de la Navidad, el Niño Dios ha nacido y está en cada uno de nuestros corazones. La ciudad se vuelve a engalanar e iluminar. Los múltiples conventos y monasterios de la ciudad abren sus puertas para vender sus dulces navideños artesanos. Grupos de jóvenes cantan villancicos por las calles y se pueden ver belenes de todos los tamaños. Y aquí en Granada se pueden visitar una multitud de ellos, pues muchos participan en el concurso de Belenes de la ciudad, donde se dan premios a diferentes categorías. Una ocasión única de visitar verdaderas obras de arte en muchos casos hechas por auténticos artesanos belenistas. Tradición que todavía pervive en esta ciudad. El espíritu de la Navidad está presente a cada paso. Es el momento mas bonito del año. ————–——-oo0oo————– Well, the miracle of Christmas is taking place again, the Christ Child is born and is in each of our hearts. The city is full of decorations and illuminated. The city’s many convents and monasteries open its gates to sell artisan Christmas sweets. Groups of young people sing Christmas carols in the streets and nativity scenes of all sizes can be visited. And here in Granada you can visit a multitude of them, as many participate in the city’s Nativity Scene contest, where prizes are given to different categories. A unique opportunity to visit real works of art, in many cases made by authentic nativity scene artisans. A tradition that still survives in this city. The spirit of Christmas is present at every turn. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
Noviembre / November 2023. Colonial Williamsburg
Bueno, pues que cierto es el dicho aquel de “alístate y conocerás mundo”. Si ya lo decían los romanos… Este mes, he tenido la oportunidad de cruzar el charco de nuevo y he conseguido escaparme un rato a un lugar lleno de “encanto histórico”, como es el poblado colonial de Williamsburg, en Virginia, EEUU. Hacía ya tiempo que no paseaba por sus calles, pobladas con personajes venidos de casi tres siglos atrás. De hecho, hace ya doce años, me inspiré en uno de ellos para modelar la figura del “colonial”, que podéis ver en la sección de esculturas de esta pagina web. Y una vez más, no pude evitar el dejarme retratar con unos de estos personajes venidos del mas allá. Como si hubiera entrado en la máquina del tiempo. ¡Me encanta, ha, ha…! ———————oo0oo————– Well, there is no doubt that the old saying «join the Army and you will travel the world» is true. It seems that the Romans already said so… Well, this month I’ve had the opportunity to cross the Spanish lake again and managed to escape for a while to a place full of USA “historical charm», such as the colonial town of Williamsburg, in Virginia, USA. It’s been a long time since I’ve walked its streets populated with characters from almost three centuries ago. In fact, twelve years ago, I was inspired by one of them to model the figure of the «colonial», which you can see in the sculpture section of this website. And by the way, once again, I couldn’t help but let myself be portrayed with two of these characters arrived from the afterlife. As if I had entered the Time Machine. I love it, ha, ha…!
