Dulzaina Player

The sculpture «Dulzainero» by José Crespo is an evocative representation of a traditional figure from the Magdalena Festival in Castellón de la Plana. Crafted in bronze and mounted on a wooden base, this piece captures the essence and festive spirit of the dulzainero, a musician integral to these celebrations.

The figure is sculpted in a characteristic pose, playing the dulzaina with both hands, emphasizing the central role of music in the festivities. The dulzainero is dressed in traditional attire, including a jacket and zaragüel, adorned with meticulously sculpted details. Crespo’s attention to the costume highlights his commitment to authenticity and historical accuracy.

The dulzainero’s face, partially obscured by the instrument, conveys a focused and dedicated expression, capturing the fervor and passion of the musician in mid-performance. The folds of the clothing and the dynamic posture suggest movement, bringing vitality and energy to the figure.

The polished wooden base provides a warm contrast to the bronze, enhancing the figure and lending a sense of stability and elegance. The combination of materials showcases Crespo’s artistic mastery and his ability to harmonize textures and tones into a cohesive work.

«The figure represents a Dulzainero, a very popular character during the Magdalena Festival in the city of Castellón. It seemed like an interesting subject, and it caught my attention, so I decided to create a sculpture of one of them. To do so, I took photographs of a few during the 2002 festival. I started the figure in Castellón in March 2002 and finished it in November of the same year.»
