Junio / June 2022. Las iglesias de madera de Maramures.
Este mes, hemos aprovechado unos dias para visitar otra de las regiones de Rumanía. En este caso le ha tocado el turno a Maramures, una zona con multiples valles situada al Norte del pais, lindando ya con Ucrania. Alli se encuentran, entre otras cosas, las iglesias ortodoxas de madera con sus caracteristicos campanarios altos y delgados. Estas fueron construidas durante los siglos XVII y XVIII como respuesta a la prohibicion de la epoca de erigir iglesias ortodoxas de piedra. Y han resistido el paso de los siglos. Estan hechas con troncos gruesos y pintadas en su interior con escenas bíblicas. Quedan todavia en pie en la zona 42 de estas iglesias y ocho de ellas fueron incluidas por la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1999. Ademas de albergar dichas iglesias, Maramures es una region encantadora que aun conserva sus pueblos con sus casas de madera, su estilo de vida tradicional y los coloridos ropajes de sus habitantes. Es una zona donde el tiempo parece haberse parado hace siglos. Una sensacion fantástica. He aprovechado para dibujar y sacar un buen numero de fotos para futuros dibujos. En la foto de arriba podeis ver la iglesia de Leud. Rumania, siempre sorprendente… —————oo0oo————— This month, we have visited another of the regions of Romania. In this case, it was the turn of Maramures, an area with multiple valleys located in the north of the country, bordering Ukraine. There you can find, among other things, Orthodox wooden churches with their characteristic tall and thin bell towers. These were built during the 17th and 18th centuries in response to the ban at that time on erecting stone Orthodox churches. And they are still standing! They are made with thick logs and painted inside with biblical scenes. There are still 42 of these churches standing in the area and eight of them were included by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites in 1999. In addition of hosting these churches, Maramures is a charming region that still preserves its villages with wooden houses, its traditional lifestyle and the colorful clothing of its inhabitants. It is an area where time seems to have stopped centuries ago. Something remarkable. I had the opportunity to draw and take a good number of photos that could serve for future drawings. Mayo / May 2022. Toma de Pensacola en 1781 por D. Bernardo de Galvez.
Este mes, ha sido productivo artisticamente hablando, pero tambien me ha pasado una cosa curiosa que aprovecho para contaros. Cuando viví en EEUU supe de la figura y de las gestas del gobernador español de Luisiana durante la guerra de independencia americana, D. Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid. Resumiendo mucho… En 1779, España entra en guerra de nuevo con Inglaterra y presta su ayuda a la independencia de las 13 colonias americanas. A partir de entonces, Galvez fue capturando todas las guarniciones inglesas a lo largo de la Florida, pasando posteriormente a hacer lo mismo en el Golfo de Mejico, tomando Mobile para acabar sitiando y tomando Pensacola. Asi Bernardo de Galvez, “Yo Solo”, con solo un bergantin, el 18 de marzo de 1781, atacó por mar la ciudad de Pensacola. Primero tomó el puerto de la ciudad y gracias a la posterior llegada de refuerzos y de un cerco de casi 2 meses, la plaza se rindió a los españoles el 10 de mayo de ese año. Las fuerzas inglesas se rindieron y entregaron todas sus banderas, artilleria y pertrechos. Gracias a esa victoria, España recuperó el control de toda la Florida. En 1784 el Congreso estadounidense citó al ya entonces Mariscal de Campo Bernardo de Gálvez y al gobierno español por su ayuda durante la Revolución, ya que la toma de Pensacola fue una de las batallas clave en la guerra de la Independencia norteamericana. Desde 2014, y gracias a la tenacidad de la ciudadana española Teresa Valcarce, el retrato de Galvez cuelga en el Capitolio de los EEUU, como corresponde al haber sido nombrado uno de los ocho ciudadanos de honor de los EEUU. Pues bueno…, todo esto que parece una batallita que solo está ya en los libros y que pocos españoles conocen, se vuelve totalmente real ante mis ojos cuando un oficial britanico, compañero de armas aqui en el cuartel general de la OTAN en Bucarest, me pregunta si yo podría averiguar donde se encuentra actualmente en España, la antigua bandera de su regimiento, ¡¡Rendida a D. Bernardo de Galvez en Pensacola en 1781!! Me pongo manos a la obra… (en la imagen, el fantastico cuadro del pintor de batallas Ferrer Dalmau; «Por España y por el Rey, Galvez en America») —————oo0oo————— This month has been quite productive artistically speaking, however I want to tell you about a curious thing that has also happened to me. When I lived in the USA, I learned about the figure and the deeds of the Spanish governor of Louisiana during the American war of independence, Don Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid. To sum it up a lot… In 1779, Spain declared war again against England and supported the independence of the 13 American colonies. From then on, Galvez captured all the garrisons in the hands of the English red coats throughout Florida, later going to do the same in the Gulf of Mexico, taking Mobile to end up besieging and taking Pensacola. On March 18, 1781, Galvez “Yo Solo” attacked Pensacola by sea by means of just a brig sailing ship. He took the port of the city and after the arrival of reinforcements, sieged the city for almost two months, which surrendered to the Spanish on May 10. English forces surrendered with all their flags, artillery and supplies. Thanks to that victory, Spain regained control of the whole Florida. In 1784 the US Congress cited Gral Galvez and the Spanish government for their help during the Revolution, since the capture of Pensacola was one of the key battles in the American war of Independence. Since 2014, and thanks to the tenacity of the Spanish citizen Teresa Valcarce, Galvez´s portrait hangs in the US Capitol as it corresponds since he was named one of the eight honorary citizens of the EEUU. Well, … all this seems like an old battle that is only in the history books and that only few Spaniards know about nowadays. But it became totally real before my eyes when, this month, a British officer, a brother in arms at the NATO headquarters in Bucharest, asked me if I could find out where the old flag of his regiment is curently located in Spain, since it was surrendered to Gral Galvez in Pensacola in 1781!! Now, I will do my best to find it out…
Abril / April 2022. Dibujante urbano entre dos mundos.
Este mes, aprovechando los dias de vacaciones de la Pascua ortodoxa, nos hemos acercado a uno de esas ciudades magicas, llenas de historia, de arte, de tradicion y de fabulas. Ademas de ser la puerta entre dos mundos, Oriente y Occidente. Y alli estaba, Santa Sofia, o Hagia Sophia, un lugar emblematico e imponente como hay pocos en el mundo. Simbolo de imperios y lugar de culto de religiones. ¡1.500 años de historia nos contemplaban! Como he disfrutado dibujandola y soñando con las multiples historias sucedidas alrededor de sus muros… Pura magia. —————oo0oo————— This month, taking advantage of the Orthodox Easter vacation days, we have visited one of those magical places that are full of history, art, tradition and fables. Besides being the gate between two worlds; the East and the West. An there it was, Santa Sophia, or Hagia Sophia, an emblematic and imposing place like there are only a few in the world. Symbol of Empires and place of worship of different religions. 15 centuries of history were watching us! I have enjoyed drawing it and dreaming about the many stories that happenned around its walls. Pure magic!
Marzo / March 2022. Exposicion por el dia de la OTAN
En unos dias, se va a celebrar en Bucarest el aniversario de la creacion de la OTAN. Para ello, del uno al siete de abril, se ha organizado una exposicion de arte en el Circulo Militar Nacional, en el centro de la capital. Organizada por el Cuartel General de la Division Multinacional Sur-Este y con la colaboracion de la Embajada de España, voy a llevar a cabo una exposicion individual con aproximadamente 70 obras entre oleos, acuarelas, dibujos a tinta y a grafito asi como esculturas de bronce. Un autentico reto en el que llevo trabajando un tiempo. Asi que si os pasarais por aquí en dichas fechas, no dejeis de visitarla, ¡Pues va a ser la exposicion del año en Bucarest! —————oo0oo————— In a few days, the anniversary of the creation of NATO will be celebrated in Bucharest. For this, from April 1 to 7, an art exhibition has been organized in the National Military Circle, in the center of the capital. Organized by the Multinational Division South-East Headquarters and with the collaboration of the Embassy of Spain, I am going to carry out a solo exhibition of approximately 70 works including oil paintings, watercolours, ink and graphite drawings, as well as bronze sculptures. A real challenge that I have been working on for a while. So if you happen to be here on those dates, do not forget to visit it, because it will be the exhibition of the year in Bucharest!
Febrero / February 2022. Un disfrute para los sentidos.
Este mes hemos vuelto al Ateneo Romano o “Ateneul Roman”, como aquí se llama. Este auditorio es una de esas joyas que se pueden encontrar dando un paseo por el centro de Bucarest. El Ateneo es un edificio singular que forma parte del Patrimonio Europeo. Alberga a la filarmonica “George Enescu” y presta su servicio desde el año 1888. En 1992 se llevó a cabo en el mismo una importante restauración que evitó su derrumbe y que permitió que se pueda seguir disfrutando de él a dia de hoy. La filarmonica George Enescu, cuenta con un programa de conciertos muy completo y a precios más que asequibles. Escuchar un concierto en este auditorio, como podeis ver en la foto, es un completo disfrute para los sentidos. El auditorio cuenta además con una magnifica pintura al fresco a lo largo de la sala, del pintor rumano Costin Petrescu que representa escenarios de la historia de Rumania. Esta es sin duda una visita recomendada. Lo dicho, arte por los cuatro costados en Bucarest, una ciudad sorprendente… —————oo0oo————— This month we have returned to the Roman Athenaeum or “Ateneul Roman”. This concert hall is one of those gems that can be found walking through the center of Bucharest. This a unique building that is part of the European Heritage. It houses the «George Enescu» philharmonic and has been serving since 1888. A century later, in 1992, an important restoration prevented its collapse and allowed it to be enjoyed today. The George Enescu Philharmonic has a very complete concert program at really affordable prices. Listening to a concert in this auditorium, as you can see in the photo, is a complete enjoyment for the senses. The auditorium has a magnificent fresco painting all around it by the Romanian painter Costin Petrescu that represents scenes from the history of Romania. Art all around in Bucharest, always an amazing city…
Enero / January 2022. ¡Únete al cuadro!
Este mes he preparado un poster para apoyar la conmemoracion del “dia de los Tercios”, que se viene celebrando desde hace ya algunos años todos los 31 de enero. Como ya comenté en anteriores posts, se trata de una iniciativa con la finalidad de recuperar y divulgar la historia de aquellas unidades, únicas en la historia, que se convirtieron en la mejor Infanteria del mundo y que sentaron el poderio de España a lo largo y ancho de Europa y mas allá. Esta iniciativa esta tomando fuerza y de hecho se acaba de lanzar una campaña de suscripcion popular para financiar un monumento a los Tercios en el paseo de la Castellana en Madrid. Asi que ahi va mi granito de arena. ¡Únete al cuadro! Todas las picas suman. Espero que os guste. —————oo0oo————— This month I have been working in a poster to support the commemoration of the «Day of the Thirds» that is celebrated every January 31. As I already mentioned in previous posts, this is an initiative with the aim of recovering the history of those units, which became the best Infantry in the world and which sustained the power of Spain all throughout Europe and beyond. This initiative is gaining strength and in fact a popular subscription campaign has just been launched to finance a monument to the Tercios in the Castellana avenue in Madrid. So, there it goes my bit. Join the square! All the pikes add up. I hope you like it.
Diciembre / December 2021. El árbol de Navidad
Este mes me sucedió una cosa curiosa. Paseando por Bucarest pasé por delante de una iglesia ortodoxa que me pareció singular y que estaba abierta, así que me decidí a entrar. Las iglesias ortodoxas suelen estar profúsamente decoradas en su interior y siempre merecen una visita. Al poco de entrar se me acercó el sacerdote de la misma al que creí entender que ese era el día en que decoraban el árbol de Navidad y que toda ayuda era buena. De hecho, había un árbol bien grande dentro de la iglesia y la que resultó ser su familia así como algunos feligreses estaban atareados poniendo bolas y adornos en el mismo con la ayuda de una escalera. Pues bueno, como iba a decir que no… Y lo que empezó siendo; “solo tiene que colocar una bola” se convirtió en que ahí eché un buen rato con el resto de los presentes hasta dejar el árbol listo. Y ahí me despedí pues de lo contrario veía que me quedaba a cenar con ellos… Un bonito día. ¡Venga, ya estamos ahí, la Navidad ha llegado y el niño Dios va a nacer! ¡Feliz Navidad! —————oo0oo————— This December an unusual thing happened to me, one of those that will probably linger in my memory. Walking through Bucharest I passed by a nice Orthodox church that was open. So I decided to visit it. Orthodox churches, which are often lavishly decorated inside, are always worth a visit. Shortly after entering, I was approached by the priest who as far as I understood told me that that was the day they decorated the Christmas tree and that all help was welcome. In fact, there was a very large tree inside the church and what turned out to be his family and some parishioners were all busy putting balls and ornaments on it with the help of a ladder. So what started out as; «You only have to put a ball in the tree» became that there I spent a good time with the rest until the tree was ready. And then I said goodbye because otherwise I saw that I was staying for dinner with them… A beautiful day. Come on, we’re there, Christmas has arrived! Merry Christmas!
Noviembre / November 2021. Sin perder el paso.
Este mes he conseguido dedicar un buen numero de horas al arte pues, ademas tengo un par de proyectos en ciernes. Ya lo dicen los Maestros, todos los dias hay que echar un rato, aunque solo sean diez minutos. Se trata de no perder la practica. Hay que buscar la manera de abstraerse un rato de las cosas mundanas y no perder el paso artistico. Mientras, en Bucuresti ya esta en pie el mercadillo de Navidad y las calles iluminadas. Pronto nacerá el Niño Dios. Que epoca mas bonita. —————oo0oo————— This month I managed to devote a good number of hours to art since I have a couple of projects in the making. As the Masters said, every day you have to find a little time, even if it is ten minutes, in order not to lose practice. You have to be able to abstract yourself from the world and not lose the artistic track. In the meanwhile, in Bucuresti the Christmas market is up and running and the streets are already illuminated. Little Jesus will be born soon. The most wonderful wonderful time in the year!
Octubre / October 2021. Ha llegado el otoño.
Ha llegado el otoño. Tambien a Bucarest. Y los arboles estan cambiando los colores de sus hojas antes de perderlas. Este es un momento mágico donde la madre naturaleza nos deja una vez mas con la boca abierta. Asi que es el momento perfecto para salir de casa y buscar estos paisajes. No hace falta irse muy lejos. En la misma ciudad, en sus parques y es sus calles arboladas se puede disfrutar de este momento. Callejear sin destino es una buena practica, pues ademas siempre ayuda a descubrir joyas escondidas como la mansión que podeis ver en la imagen. Se trata de la casa Nicolescu-Dorobantu, de estilo neo-gotico frances, perdida en una pequeña calle en los alrededores de calea Victoriei, en el centro de Bucarest El otoño esta lleno de sorpresas y hay que salir a apreciarlas y disfrutarlas. No descarto volver a dicha calle a dibujar ese palacete… —————oo0oo————— Autumn has arrived. Also to Bucharest. And trees change the colors of their leaves before losing them. This is a magical moment where Mother Nature leaves us open-mouthed once again. So it is the perfect time to get out and look for these landscapes. You do not have to go far. In the city itself, in its parks and its tree-lined streets, you can enjoy this season. Wandering around without a destination is a good practice, as it also helps discover hidden gems. Like the mansion Nicolescu-Dorobant, in the surroundings of Calea Victoriei in the center of Bucharest. Autumn is full of surprises and you have to go out to appreciate and enjoy them. I think I’ll go back to that street to draw that mansion …
Septiembre / September 2021. Monasterios de Bucovina.
Este mes, antes de que empiece el frio, nos hemos escapado a la region de Bucovina, situada al NE de Rumania. Alli se encuentran unos monasterios cubiertos de frescos de inspiracion bizantina. Dichos frescos no solo estan en su interior sino tambien en el exterior. Son autenticas joyas. Ocho de ellos han sido declarados patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO. La mayor parte de ellos fueron construidos entre los siglos XV y XVI, durante el reinado de Esteban el Grande de Moldavia (1457-1504), como conmemoracion de victorias militares sobre los Otomanos. Al haber sido construidos en un breve periodo de tiempo, todos tienen unas caracteristicas similares, pero tambien cuentan con claras diferencias, lo que hace de cada uno de ellos un objeto de arte único. Algunos de ellos pueden ser identificados por el uso de un color particularmente rico, como el rojo en el monasterio de Humor, el azul en el de Voronet, el amarillo en el de Moldovita o el verde en el de Arbore. Todavia conservan las murallas que las rodeaban para su defensa ante las invasiones y en muchos casos se encuentran situados en los bellos parajes boscosos de los Carpatos Orientales a su paso por la Bucovina. Algunos de ellos cuentan con comunidades de monjas en sus instalaciones, que mantienen estos lugares en perfecto estado de revista. ¡Un autentico disfrute para la vista! ¡Y tambien para el alma! En la foto de arriba podeis ver el de Voronet, con su distintivo color azul Voronet, monasterio tambien conocido como la capilla Sixtina del Este. No hay duda de que Rumania es un pais sorprendente. —————oo0oo————— This month, before the cold arrives, we made a getaway to the Bucovina region, located NE of Romania. There are a series of monasteries covered with frescoes of Byzantine inspiration, inside and outside, which are incomparable jewels. Eight of them have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Most of them were built between the 15th and 16th centuries, during the reign of Stephen the Great of Moldova (1457-1504), as a commemoration of military victories over the Ottomans. They all have similar characteristics, but also their differences, which makes each of them a unique art object. Some can be identified by the use of a particularly rich color, such as red in Humor monastery, blue in Voronet, yellow in Moldovita or green in Arbore. They still conserve the walls that surrounded them for their defense against invasions and in many cases they are found in the beautiful wooden areas of the Eastern Carpathians as they pass through Bucovina. Many are currently inhabited by communities of nuns who maintain places in perfect conditions. A real treat for the eyes! And also for the soul! In the photo you can see Voronet, with its distinctive Voronet blue color, also known as the Sistine Chapel of the East. Romania, what a surprising country!
