Octubre / October 2012. La «Hispanic Society of America».

I was born in Castellon and lived in Valencia for a number of years, so I cannot help being an admirer of Joaquin Sorolla, “the painter of light”. In fact, I have strolled through his museum-house in Madrid many times. And I had surely heard about the “Hispanic Society of America” in NY, where Sorolla’s “vision of Spain” paintings are located, after being commissioned, at the beginning of the XX century, by Archer Huntington, an American philanthropist and a lover of Spain.

Recently I had the chance to visit the Hispanic Society, located in Harlem, NY. Inside this big and beautiful art deco building, not only the paintings of Sorolla but also of Goya, el Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Zuloaga, etc… can be admired, along with many other interesting pieces related to the history of Spain.

A big sculpture of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar “El Cid” on horseback, is located at the entrance of the building to the delight of my wife who really misses her hometown Burgos, where “El Cid” is the old hero.

In short, in the Hispanic Society, the visitor can find a sample of the artwork of some of the best Spanish masters. And thanks to Sorolla’s paintings can also see the big variety of people and traditions that existed at that time and still exist today in Spain, since many of the images portrayed by Sorolla a century ago remain alive nowadays in Spain. A visit to this museum is a must for those who are interested in Spain and its art.
